E85 Infrastructure Incentives Included in
Energy Bill Conference Report

Washington D.C. - The House and Senate Energy Bill conferees have released the final conference committee report and several provisions that will advance the use of E85 have been included in the legislation.  It is expected that both the Senate and House will vote on the Energy Bill prior to leaving Washington this week for the summer recess.  President Bush has encouraged the Congress to send him an Energy Bill before the first of August.  As recommended by the Conference Committee, the following provisions have been included:
  • A 30% federal income tax credit, up to $30,000 to assist with the establishment of alternative fuel infrastructure.  This provision would become effective on January 1, 2006 and be available for two years.
  • A requirement that federal fleets purchase alternative fuel for use in their alternative fuel vehicles.
  • A provision that calls on the Secretary of the Deptartment of Energy to make grants and issue contracts to encourage the advancement of hybrid-flexible fuel vehicles.

Curtis Donaldson, Chairman of the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition stated, "We are very appreciative of all the work that has been done by so many of our supporters and advocates to encourage the inclusion of these E85 provisions in the Energy Bill.  We are confident that the Congress will approve this bill and we look forward to redoubling our efforts to establish E85 fueling locations across the nation.  While we were working with many members of the Congress in a bi-partisan manner to advance these tax incentives, we would like to give our special thanks to Senators Obama, Talent, Grassley and Baucus who led this effort in the Senate.  Congresswoman Julia Carson and Congressman John Shimkus provided outstanding leadership in the House along with the personal support of Speaker Hastert. We would also like to thank Senator Hatch for his years of leadership on the Clear Act."
