“Heart of Iowa Coop wants
to send a clear message to the public that there are
options about the fuel they put in their tank. They can
buy E85 which is produced from corn right here in Iowa, or
they can continue to buy their fuel from the Middle East,"
said Borton.
E85 is a high-powered,
clean-burning fuel that can be used in flexible-fuel
vehicles (FFVs). According to Iowa DOT reports, there
are nearly 70,000 FFVs on the roads in Iowa today such as
the Chevrolet Suburban, Ford Taurus, and Chrysler
mini-van. Check with your local auto dealer or your
owner’s manual to see if you can use this clean-burning,
high-performing renewable fuel.
“With Iowa slated to be the
#1 ethanol producer in the nation in 2005 and 82% of our
ethanol currently being shipped out to the coasts, the
time is right for Iowa to work on establishing new markets
for ethanol here at home,” said Christi Vander Voort, Iowa
E85 Coordinator for the National Ethanol Vehicle
Coalition.
Borton added, “Our new
ethanol plant to be built in Nevada, IA this fall will
help relieve the need for more and more crude oil by
producing 50 million gallons of ethanol a year and at the
same time increasing rural economic development. That is
why we are opening our second E85 station at our new bulk
plant located on 600th Avenue just north of
Lincoln Way, 2 miles west of Nevada in October. This
location is between Nevada and Ames for convenience to
both communities”
During the Story City grand
opening event, burgers will be grilled by the Story County
Beef Producers and door prizes will be awarded.
Vander Voort will be
available during the event to answer any questions about
E85 and FFVs, and Gookin Ford of Story City will be on
hand to show off the Ford FFVs on display and discuss
their engines and performance.
Heart of Iowa Coop – Cenex Pump 24 is
Iowa’s 12th E85 facility. The station
is open 24 hours a day to the public, state and federal
vehicles, and can only be accessed by credit card
or the local Heart of Iowa Coop card.
