DaimlerChrysler to Offer MY ’05 E85 Minivans

DaimlerChrylser has been one of the leading manufacturers of E85 vehicles.  However, the automobile company decided not to offer their 3.3L Chrysler Voyager minivan, Dodge Caravan minivan and Chrysler Town and Country minivan as E85-compatible in their Model Year 2004 line.  Consequently, many fleet managers and other E85 advocates were disappointed.

The manufacturer has stated recently that they WILL begin their Model Year 2005 line with E85-compatible minivans.  The new line is expected to roll out in January however; the flexible-fuel engine will not be a standard option.  The clean-burning vehicles will incur a slight incremental cost.

Although the NEVC is disappointed that all of DaimlerChrysler minivans will not be produced with E85 compatibility as standard equipment, we are pleased that DCX management have listened to their many customers that demanded the E85 minivan be produced.

How to Promote Your Local E85 Station

So you have a new E85 pump?  People are flocking to use the clean-burning alternative fuel, right? Unfortunately, most likely not right away.  An E85 pump, just as any new product, needs to be promoted and marketed.  Below are a few ideas on making your new E85 pump successful.

First, you must label your product in a way where customers will know it is an E85 pump and NOT a gasoline pump.  Shown to the right, the pump contains signage labeling it as an E85 pump.  To view all available E85 pump decals and signage, click here.

The E85 station should also list the price of E85 as they do their other fuel blends.

A Grand Opening event is also recommended to assist in announcing a new E85 pump.  Promoting the product with an E85 for 85 Cents event during the Grand Opening is especially beneficial for a new location.  Advertising in local arenas is an excellent way to spread the word about the event and the new product.   Newspaper ads (click here to view a sample) explaining the who, what, when, and why of the event brings awareness to individuals not familiar with the product.

Radio advertising is a second means to alert the public about the promotion.  If your budget allows, a live radio remote during noon or drive home times, can increase public turnout.  Television advertising, although sometimes quite costly, is another approach you may wish to partake.

An almost essential way to ensure a successful promotion is to contact your local E85 automobile dealership and ask for their flexible-fuel vehicle sales list.  This list can then be used to send mailings to E85 vehicle owners to alert them of the new E85 pump and promotional event.  You will be surprised.  Many E85 vehicle owners do not even know that they are driving a flexible-fuel vehicle!  A sample postcard can be seen by clicking here.  Be sure to have local dealerships display a vehicle at the promotion and request giveaways such as t-shirts, hats, keychains, pens and other items.

Another idea is to place a banner at the station alerting passer-bys of the new fuel and promotion.

A press conference is a great way to kick-off a Grand Opening.  Invite state and local dignitaries, station investors, and fleet administrators to make brief presentations.   Send a press release including the press conference agenda to local media a couple of days before the event.  This is FREE advertising for the E85 site.  A sample press release can be found by clicking here.  Send the release a second time the morning of the event to ensure press coverage.

Be sure to have individuals familiar with the E85 product available at the event to hand out press packets, E85 informational materials, E85 and FFV promotional items, and to ensure no misfueling.  Remember, a complete listing of E85 vehicles and their corresponding E85 compatible vehicle identification numbers can be found on the NEVC website at http://www.e85fuel.com/.

Good luck!  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the NEVC office.

GM/NEVC Partnership Announcement in MO

On October 29, 2003, General Motors announced a campaign that will promote E85 and flexible-fuel vehicles in Missouri.  The announcement was made at the Grand Opening of a new E85 location in Grain Valley, Missouri.  The promotion is part of a six-state initiative called I Fuel Good.

The campaign plans to educate drivers of GM E85-compatible vehicles and GM sales associates on the benefits of E85 and flexible-fuel vehicles.  An E85 $30 debit card along with an educational packet will be sent to Missouri GM FFV owners.  The debit card can be used to purchase E85 fuel.

“This campaign will give a greater understanding of E85 and flexible-fuel vehicles,” said John Gaydash, Director of Marketing for General Motors Corporation, Fleet & Commercial Operations.  Missouri is the fifth state to join in the campaign.  The promotion is active in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois.

“We have seen an increase of E85 use since our program began and hope to see an increase here in Missouri,” stated Gaydash.

Peter Hofherr, Director, Missouri Department of Agriculture added, “This type of promotion helps our farmers prosper.”

Other speakers at the kick-off included:  Gary Marshall, Chief Executive Officer, Missouri Corn Growers Association, and Chairman Emeritus, National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition; David Klindt, Chairman, Missouri Senate Agriculture Committee; and Phil Lampert, Executive Director of the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition.

Following the comments, the station offered E85 for 85 Cents for flexible-fuel vehicle owners.  The promotion concluded at 4 p.m.

The new E85 pump in Grain Valley, Missouri, is located at the Apple Trail Travel Center at 1103 North Buckner Tarsney Road at the corner of I-70 and Buckner Road at Exit 24.  The station is open 24-hours-a-day and includes amenities such as a restaurant and deli, an ATM machine and pay-at-the pump option.

2004 Purchasing Guide Coming Soon

The 2004 Flexible-Fuel Vehicle Purchasing Guide will be available soon.  The booklet will list E85-compatible vehicles offered by vehicle manufacturers in Model Year 2004.  It will also list current E85 fueling locations throughout the U.S.

The Purchasing Guide should be available late fall.  Keep reading upcoming NEVC FYI Newsletters for a specific date.

Ethanol Plants as Members of the NEVC

The NEVC has a growing list of members, five of which include ethanol plants.  We would like to welcome the following as members of our organization:

Northeast Missouri Grain LLC is a farmer-owned 40 million gallon annual ethanol production facility.  NEMO is located 5 miles east of Macon, MO on highway 36 and Major Avenue.

VeraSun Energy is located in Aurora, South Dakota.  The plant held a ground-breaking ceremony in February 2003. The facility is still under construction.  Output is estimated at  100 million gallons per year.

Golden Triangle Energy Corporation is located in Craig, Missouri. This farmer-owned ethanol plant produces about 20 million gallons of ethanol per year.

Adkins Energy LLC is located in Lena, Illinois.  The plant produces 40 million gallons of ethanol per year.

78th Street Ethanol produces about 5.5 millions of ethanol per year in Blairstown, Iowa.

“The NEVC is very pleased to have added these new ethanol producers to our membership” said Phil Lampert, Executive Director of the NEVC.  “We are promoting and advancing a new use of ethanol and it’s important that producers support and assist in these efforts.”

Win $100 and NEVC Membership in NEVC Logo Contest

The National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition (NEVC) is considering the adoption of a new company logo and you could win $100 cash and a NEVC membership by creating one!  While we maintain the use of the E85 logo which is trademarked and copywrited, we do not actually have our own independent logo.  We would appreciate your ideas of a logo that would assist in representing our goals of advancing the use of domestic-renewable transportation fuels.

Email the graphic along with a valid return email address, your name, address, and phone number to mkautz@e85fuel.com.  The winner will be announced in the NEVC FYI Newsletter on December 3, 2003.

 Letters to the NEVC

Letters to the NEVC - This section highlights emails that the NEVC has recently received.  Many of the comments or suggestions that we receive are of interest to a wider audience and we would like to share them with our readers.

Comparing E85 to Gasoline

The NEVC has had many inquiries about the comparison of E85 to regular unleaded gasoline.  E85 has many benefits compared to regular unleaded gasoline such as:  there is no special training to fuel an E85 vehicle; E85 is a renewable fuel; E85 reduces greenhouse gas emissions; an individual can operate on gasoline or ethanol; and E85 promotes domestic energy security and jobs.

On the other hand, ethanol has less energy content than gasoline. E85 has a much higher octane (ranging from 100 to 105) than gasoline. FFVs are not optimized to E85, so they experience a 5% to 15% drop in fuel economy. This will vary based on temperature and driving conditions.

For comparison purposes, aggressive driving habits can result in a 20% loss and low tire pressure can reduce mileage by 6%. Research indicates Ford FFVs experience a 5% horsepower gain on E85. The range of any particular vehicle is dependent on the size of the fuel tank and driving habits. Current Ford Taurus FFVs have an 18-gallon fuel tank and will normally travel 350 miles between refuelings.

E85 Compatible Truck?

Michelle,

My name is Mark Rhea and I am an employed in Ursa, Illinois.  I will be receiving a new truck for my position in the near future.  I am considering an E85 engine for the truck, but I am having some difficulty locating one.  I need a 3/4 ton truck for heavy hauling and towing.  I've looked at Chevys, but they do not offer the E85 engine in the 3/4 ton trucks.  I am wanting to know if the 6.0L standard engine can be equipped with E85.  My reasoning for wanting this is due to the farmers that I work with and wanting to promote a natural resource.  I would appreciate it if you would be able to find the information I am requesting.

Thank you for your help,
Mark Rhea

. . .

Mark,

Unfortunately, there are no 3/4 ton E85 compatible pickup trucks available at this time.   GM offers the 5.3L V-8 engine Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra half-ton pickups.  DaimlerChrysler also offers the Model Year 2004 4.7L Dodge Ram Pickup 1500 Series.  Hopefully we will have additional larger vehicles available with the flexible-fuel option in years to come.  Keep an eye on our website at www.E85Fuel.com for additional E85 compatible vehicles.

Thank you for your interest in E85!
Michelle Kautz
